< This picture came up when i typed in Miranda from the tempest. I think this depicts Miranda well because she was on an Island (just like the girl in the picture is) and she looks alone, beautiful. Miranda looks like she is looking for someone or something in the picture I feel that might be someone to love. This art shows that she seems alone, but hopeful.
<This picture represents the love and compassion Miranda shows for eachother when they see eachother on the shore. They act so in love even though they might have only known eachother for a very short period of time. Ferdinand is relieved to know he is not the only human thing on the island and rejoices and feels so much happiness for being alive that he immediatly falls for Miranda.
^ This rose is a good description of Miranda because she is described as beautiful in The Tempest. When Ferdinand first saw her he described her as a maid and a goddess. Nobody calls someone that for no reason so this gives you a clue of what Miranda may look like. Caliban also as we know has called Miranda beautiful to Stephano which shows that he also finds her attractive.
^^ I picked this picture to show Mirandas innocence because she is very young and has not really been tainted by the cruel world around her. She has been on an island for quite a long time and experienced the attempt of violation from Caliban, but you can tell she is very curious and nieve. When she see Ferdinand she immediatly was infatuated with him because he was a man that had the possibility of being suitable for her. She does not really understand that it would have been possible for him to immediatly reject her or the social norms of that time.
1.For a teenage girl to choose who she wanted to marry was very unusual. Fathers were expected to give their daughters dowries. The husband is expected to promise a settlement of some kind. Sometimes there were contracts for marriages that were drawn out for royalty or the rich. For women of royalty the bible, church and social custom was reinforced greatly.
-This is connected to the play in a way that Miranda in all actuality chose who she wanted to marry. Even though Prospero wanted her to be with Ferdinand he never forced Miranda. There this was probably a bit unusal expecially since Miranda was the one to ask Ferdinand if he would marry her. There was'nt a contract either, so this kind of engagment we can tell is abnormal for this time period.
2.Women of every class were expected to have many skilly such as stoll spinning
-We know that in the sotry Prospero was able to teach Miranda how to talk, but it never mentions her gaining any skill in the crafts certain women are expected to know. Therefore we can conclude that Miranda might not fit in as well as we would expect when she finally sails home.
3. All women were expected to have children and royal/rich women usually had wet nurses to breast feed there children instead of the rich/ royal women doing it for themselves.
-Miranda does not know how life is like for women of royalty. The play says she has been on the island since she was 3 and in the present time of the play she is a preteen. Miranda has not been around many people in her life let alone men, and the first actual man that it would be appropriate for her to have feelings for is Ferdinand. Miranda does not know that she is expected to pump out kids.
4. Women or royalty were usually taught by teachers or older brother how to read and write. They were usually taught to become fluent in Latin, Greek and French.
- This relates to Miranda because in the beginning of the play Prospero says that he has taught Miranda so much more than the average princess would know.
5. Education of dance was very important for women especially of royalty because it was one the most popular and prestigious things to do during the 1600's. To be able to dance was more of a necessity than hobby.
- In the play it never mentions Prospero showing Miranda how to dance she basically knows more facts than she does know certain skills. She is in fact of royal blood therefore she should know how to dance, but it is never really mentioned in the play.
6. Married women usually wore their hair in a cap or coif
A- Miranda most likely doesn’t go by the rules of proper dress because A. she lives on an island and B. she is not surrounded by people who dress like that.
7. for a less dressy look women usually wore their hair to their shoulders that reached to their sides and had a high bun on the back of their head. Bangs or fringes were also a part of the style that could be worn along with the bun high on their head.
There isn’t anything in the play that describes how Miranda looks except for the fact that she is beautiful. This would relate to her though because again like many of the facts above it shows you how she is not accustomed at all to the 17th century.
8.Corsets were worn as part of women’s undergarments, they were usually stiff and extended over the woman’s stomach.
- Miranda is on a Island and she probably is not required to be all dressed up especially if she around water and sand on the time. In the plays on television and in the pictures on the internet it does show her in regular clothing. I think it is safe to assume that she probably dresses like they dressed in the 17th century, but in the play it is not a huge issue.
2 facts about Miranda
9. Miranda is a curious preteen who has know knowledge of any other place except for the Island that her and her father were banished to.

I picked P.Y.T. by Michael Jackson because Miranda in the play is often described as someone who is beautiful. She is also very young and the main chorus of this song is "I want to love you (P.Y.T) Pretty young things." That is a very good way to describe Miranda because she is a young a beautiful girl. I also picked it because Ferdinand acts so infatuated with her and says he will do anything for her and in the song it talks about how the guy wants to love this pretty young girl
